Madagascan Warblers
Malagasy warblers are small forest songbirds whose subdued olive, brown and yellowish plumage can conceal substantial differences in bill shape and body proportions. The family includes tetrakas, oxylabes and bernierias, rather than one easily recognized, uniform warbler silhouette. Examples include White-throated Oxylabes (Oxylabes madagascariensis), Long-billed Bernieria (Bernieria madagascariensis), and Cryptic Warbler (Cryptosylvicola randrianasoloi). They feed on insects and can join mixed feeding flocks while searching different levels of forest vegetation. Compare bill length, throat markings and the height at which a bird is feeding.
How to recognize Madagascan Warblers
- Compare the bill's length and depth rather than olive colour alone.
- Check the throat, eyebrow and the contrast around the eye.
- Record feeding height and companions in a mixed forest flock.
Where they live
The family occurs in Madagascar, with most species in the eastern humid forests. Eastern rainforest supports most members, but some inhabit the drier southwestern parts of the island. Forest structure and feeding height vary among species, so a single description of dense undergrowth cannot represent every member accurately. Use the locality and forest type together; Madagascar's humid east and dry southwest support different sets of species.
