BIRDGACHA / FIELD NOTES

Waxwings

Waxwings are sleek songbirds with conspicuous crests, black facial masks and smoothly blended brownish or grey plumage. Coloured tail tips and small, sometimes waxlike wing ornaments provide useful details, but their visibility depends on the bird's age and viewing angle. Examples include Bohemian Waxwing (Bombycilla garrulus), Japanese Waxwing (Bombycilla japonica), and Cedar Waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum). Fruit is particularly important outside breeding, and mobile flocks can gather wherever suitable berries are abundant. Crest shape, wing markings and the colour beneath the tail help separate the waxwings gathered in a feeding flock.

How to recognize Waxwings

  • Look for the swept crest and sharply contrasting black mask.
  • Compare undertail colour with the wing's pale and coloured markings.
  • Check tail-tip colour and the geographical range of each species.

Where they live

The family occurs in North America and Eurasia, with species-specific seasonal movements. Woodland and forest edges provide nesting and feeding sites, while fruiting shrubs and trees attract wandering flocks into parks, gardens and towns. Seasonal fruit supplies can make local appearances irregular even within a familiar wintering region. The three species have different ranges; a fruiting garden attracts birds but does not establish which waxwing is present.
