BIRDGACHA / FIELD NOTES
Puffbirds
Puffbirds combine large heads, conspicuous eyes and strong bills with loose plumage that gives many a rounded appearance. Brown, grey, black and rufous patterns are common, with collars, facial markings and breast bands offering stronger clues than overall colour. Examples include White-necked Puffbird (Notharchus hyperrhynchus), Chestnut-capped Puffbird (Bucco macrodactylus), and Barred Puffbird (Nystalus radiatus). Many wait quietly on exposed perches before making short excursions to capture insects and other small prey. Scan apparently empty branches carefully: a motionless puffbird can remain surprisingly easy to overlook.
How to recognize Puffbirds
- Look for the large head, heavy bill and relaxed, rounded posture.
- Compare collars, breast bands and pale areas around the face.
- Watch for long still periods followed by short hunting flights.
Where they live
The family occurs in tropical America, from Mexico through Central America into South America. Forests, wooded edges and foothill vegetation support different species, with especially high diversity in the Amazon region. Some occupy more open woodland, so canopy density and the surrounding landscape help distinguish the likely candidates. Compare the height and exposure of a feeding perch as well as the vegetation immediately around the bird.
