BIRDGACHA / FIELD NOTES

Mousebirds

Mousebirds have small, soft-looking bodies, short curved bills, mobile crests and exceptionally long, tapered tails. Their generally grey or brown plumage is subdued, while strong feet help them clamber through vegetation in positions that would be awkward for many other birds. Examples include Speckled Mousebird (Colius striatus), Blue-naped Mousebird (Urocolius macrourus), and White-headed Mousebird (Colius leucocephalus). They eat fruit and other plant material, often moving socially through bushes and feeding trees. The nape, face and bill carry small colour contrasts within the soft grey-brown plumage and long-tailed outline of mousebirds.

How to recognize Mousebirds

  • Look for a very long tapered tail and a short, crested head.
  • Watch clambering and hanging movements supported by strong grasping feet.
  • Compare nape colour, facial skin and the pattern of the bill.

Where they live

The family occurs in sub-Saharan Africa. Bushland, woodland, scrub, gardens and other vegetated landscapes supply feeding and resting cover. Different species use different African regions and vegetation types, but tangles of branches and accessible fruiting plants frequently shape where groups are encountered. A flock may appear briefly at a fruiting bush before disappearing into surrounding cover; watch the route taken between shrubs.
