BIRDGACHA / FIELD NOTES
Rollers
Rollers are sturdy, large-headed birds with strong bills and often brilliant blue or turquoise areas on the wings. Perched birds may look relatively muted, but the spread wings reveal contrasting colours, and some species have elongated outer tail feathers. Examples include Purple Roller (Coracias naevius), Blue-throated Roller (Eurystomus gularis), and Indian Roller (Coracias benghalensis). Many watch from exposed perches before dropping or flying out to capture insects and other small prey. Compare both the perched head pattern and the expanded wing colours, since each reveals different identification marks.
How to recognize Rollers
- Look for a large head, strong bill and an upright hunting perch.
- Compare blue wing panels with the colour of the breast and back.
- Check elongated tail feathers and distinctive flight colours when visible.
Where they live
The family occurs in Africa, Europe and warm parts of Asia, extending east into Australasia. Open woodland, savanna, farmland with scattered trees and forest edges provide suitable feeding viewpoints for many species. Some occur in more densely wooded tropical landscapes, and migrants may appear away from their breeding habitat during seasonal movements. A roadside wire or isolated tree can be a hunting perch, but the species' regional range still needs checking.
