BIRDGACHA / FIELD NOTES
Flowerpeckers
Flowerpeckers are tiny, compact songbirds with short tails and relatively short bills. Some males show vivid red or other contrasting patches, while many species and females are much plainer olive, brown or grey birds whose small size can make details difficult to judge. Examples include Yellow-breasted Flowerpecker (Prionochilus maculatus), Olive-backed Flowerpecker (Pachyglossa olivacea), and Spectacled Flowerpecker (Dicaeum dayakorum). They feed on small fruits, including mistletoe berries, and also take nectar and invertebrates among foliage. Compare the location of any bright patch and the bill's outline during pauses in rapid feeding.
How to recognize Flowerpeckers
- Look for a tiny, compact body and notably short tail.
- Compare bill length and bright patches on crown, back or breast.
- Check plain female plumages and the island or elevation of the sighting.
Where they live
The family occurs in southern and Southeast Asia through parts of Australasia and nearby islands. Forests, wooded edges, gardens and other landscapes with suitable feeding plants support different species. Fruiting mistletoes and small-berried trees can attract birds into a concentrated area, while island geography and elevation strongly limit the candidates at any site. The presence of mistletoe is a useful feeding clue, but plain birds still need comparison with local females and immature plumages.
