BIRDGACHA / FIELD NOTES

Honeyguides

Honeyguides and honeybirds are generally unobtrusive tree-dwelling birds with subdued olive, brown or grey plumage and relatively short bills. Pale outer tail areas, head markings and body proportions can be important, especially because many species lack the bright colours that make other woodland birds conspicuous. Examples include Cassin's Honeybird (Prodotiscus insignis), Zenker's Honeyguide (Melignomon zenkeri), and Dwarf Honeyguide (Indicator pumilio). They take insects and wax-associated foods, but the famous behaviour of guiding people to bee nests occurs in only some members. Tail pattern, facial markings and repeated calls provide identification clues for honeyguides sitting quietly in woodland or forest cover.

How to recognize Honeyguides

  • Compare the relatively short bill and subdued olive-grey body colours.
  • Check pale outer tail feathers and any contrasting facial markings.
  • Use calls and local woodland or forest range rather than guiding behaviour alone.

Where they live

The family occurs in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of southern and Southeast Asia. Forests, woodland and wooded savanna support different species, with regional ranges separating African and Asian members. Feeding opportunities and access to nesting hosts influence local activity, while individuals can remain inconspicuous among branches for long periods. Regional range, woodland structure and the pattern of the tail help narrow the honeyguides likely to occur at a particular observation site.
