Laughingthrushes & Allies

Laughingthrushes and their relatives range from subdued brown birds to strongly patterned, colourful species. Rounded wings, substantial feet and often long tails suit movement through dense vegetation. Examples include Brown-cheeked Fulvetta (Alcippe poioicephala), Striated Laughingthrush (Grammatoptila striata), and Himalayan Cutia (Cutia nipalensis). Many travel in noisy parties, searching leaves, branches or litter for invertebrates, fruit and seeds. Duets, choruses and varied calls can reveal a group before it emerges. Plumage patterns, social behaviour and feeding height vary markedly within this large assemblage; an English name ending in babbler does not identify a single family.

Where they live

The main diversity lies in Asian forests, wooded hills and scrub, with some members extending into Africa and other regions. Dense undergrowth, bamboo, forest edge and secondary vegetation support different species. Mountain slopes can hold distinct communities at different elevations. Ground-feeding parties may follow sheltered routes through leaf litter, while other members spend more time in trees or visit fruiting bushes along openings.
