Australasian Wrens

Fairywrens, emu-wrens and grasswrens are small Australasian birds, often recognisable by their fine bills and elongated tails. Brilliant breeding males occur among fairywrens, whereas females, young birds and many grasswrens have subtler brown or streaked plumage. Examples include Wallace's Fairywren (Sipodotus wallacii), Broad-billed Fairywren (Chenorhamphus grayi), and Emperor Fairywren (Malurus cyanocephalus). They mainly take invertebrates from low vegetation and nearby ground. Social groups and helpers at nests are common in the family. The very fine, loosely structured tails of emu-wrens create a different outline from the broader tails of familiar garden fairywrens.

How to recognize Australasian Wrens

  • Bill: fine pointed bills.
  • Outline: small bodies with frequently upright tails.
  • Feeding: gleaning insects from low vegetation and ground cover.

Where they live

Australia and New Guinea contain the family's principal range. Species occupy rainforest edges, heath, woodland undergrowth, spinifex grassland and arid scrub, with many restricted to particular vegetation types. Dense low cover provides shelter and feeding surfaces even where the broader landscape is open. Fire history and changes in grass or shrub structure can strongly alter local suitability, especially for less mobile specialists of isolated habitat patches.
