Mesites

Mesites are Madagascar ground birds with strong legs, elongated tails and brown plumage that may be plain or strongly marked below. They walk through cover and search litter or soil for small food items. Examples include White-breasted Mesite (Mesitornis variegatus), Subdesert Mesite (Monias benschi), and Brown Mesite (Mesitornis unicolor). The Subdesert Mesite has a longer, more curved bill than the two Mesitornis species. Vocal groups can keep in contact while moving through undergrowth. Although often reluctant to fly, mesites can use low branches or short flights, making a blanket description of the family as flightless misleading.

How to recognize Mesites

Bill: straight or downcurved probing bills.
Outline: long tails and strong walking legs.
Feeding: searching Madagascar's ground litter and scrub for food.

Where they live

Madagascar contains three distinct mesite habitats. Brown Mesites inhabit humid eastern forest, White-breasted Mesites occupy drier western woodland, and Subdesert Mesites live in southwestern spiny scrub. Ground cover and litter provide feeding surfaces, while low woody vegetation offers shelter. These contrasting environments should remain separate in a habitat account: the dry, open-looking scrub associated with one mesite is a poor description of the wet forest occupied by another.
