Wattle-eyes, Batises

Batises, wattle-eyes and their allies are small African birds with broad-based bills and active insect-hunting habits. Breast bands and contrasting plumage are prominent in many batises, while coloured eye wattles distinguish the wattle-eyes. Examples include Rwenzori Batis (Batis diops), White-tailed Shrike (Lanioturdus torquatus), and West African Wattle-eye (Dyaphorophyia hormophora). They glean foliage and make short catching flights. Males and females may differ in chest colour or pattern, and repeated whistles often help locate a bird in cover. The ground-associated White-tailed Shrike demonstrates that the family's members are not all identical small canopy flycatchers with ornamental eye skin.

How to recognize Wattle-eyes, Batises

  • Bill: broad-based slightly hooked bills.
  • Outline: small bodies with contrasting breast bands or eye wattles.
  • Feeding: gleaning foliage and catching insects in short sallies.

Where they live

Forest, woodland, thorn scrub and other wooded habitats across sub-Saharan Africa support different species. Some batises occupy dry open vegetation, whereas several wattle-eyes are associated with humid forest. Hunting birds use leaves, branches and nearby aerial space at different heights. Local vegetation and geographic range help narrow the possibilities, especially when a brief view reveals a breast band but leaves the eye region or sex unresolved.
