BIRDGACHA / FIELD NOTES
Nuthatches
Nuthatches have compact bodies, very short tails and pointed bills that project conspicuously from the head. Strong feet grip bark as many species travel down trunks head first. Blue-grey upperparts are familiar, while eye stripes, cap colour and pale or rusty underparts distinguish several of the North American species illustrated here. Examples include White-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta carolinensis), Red-breasted Nuthatch (Sitta canadensis), and Pygmy Nuthatch (Sitta pygmaea). They search bark and branches for invertebrates, handle seeds and often store food in crevices for later use. A descending nuthatch uses its feet to grip the trunk, presenting a different climbing posture from a stiff-tailed treecreeper.
How to recognize Nuthatches
- Look for a short tail and a pointed bill on a compact, strong-footed bird.
- Compare dark caps, pale eyebrows and any dark stripe through the eye.
- Check pale versus rusty underparts in the North American examples.
- Watch how the bird grips bark while descending head first.
Where they live
The family occurs in North America, Europe and Asia, with species occupying different woodland and mountain regions. Mature woodland, forest edges and parks with large trees support many nuthatches. White-breasted Nuthatches frequently use deciduous woods, whereas Red-breasted Nuthatches are closely associated with conifers. Winter movements can bring the latter into a wider range of wooded settings when food supplies change. The mix of broadleaf trees, conifers and available bark surfaces helps explain which nuthatches appear at a particular feeding site.
