Babblers, Scimitar Babblers

Tree babblers and scimitar babblers include small Asian birds with a wide range of bill shapes and head patterns. Some have conspicuously curved bills, while others are fine-billed and show streaks or contrasting facial patches. Examples include Chestnut-capped Babbler (Timalia pileata), Tawny-bellied Babbler (Dumetia hyperythra), and Grey-faced Tit-Babbler (Mixornis kelleyi). They search foliage, bamboo and tangled cover for invertebrates, often maintaining contact with calls. The Chestnut-capped Babbler has a different appearance from the longer-billed scimitar babblers. Historic use of Timaliidae was much broader, so the current catalogue family should be distinguished from other babbler groups now treated separately.

How to recognize Babblers, Scimitar Babblers

  • Bill: fine to substantial pointed bills.
  • Outline: small bodies with varied face patterns and tail lengths.
  • Feeding: gleaning insects from bamboo and tangled vegetation.

Where they live

Southern and southeastern Asian forests, bamboo, scrub and dense grass support different members. Species can occupy lowlands, foothills or mountain slopes, with local vegetation strongly influencing occurrence. Some feed among leaves above ground, while others search close to the base of dense cover. Voice and feeding height help interpret a brief sighting. A shaded bamboo patch and a grassy wet margin can therefore represent distinct habitats within this relatively varied family.
