BIRDGACHA / FIELD NOTES
Old World Sparrows, Snowfinches
Old World sparrows and their relatives generally have sturdy bodies and substantial conical bills, but the family extends beyond familiar urban sparrows. Head stripes, throat patches and wing markings provide distinctions among its varied members. Examples include Cinnamon Ibon (Hypocryptadius cinnamomeus), Pale Rockfinch (Carpospiza brachydactyla), and Rock Sparrow (Petronia petronia). Seeds are important foods, with invertebrates also taken, particularly for growing young. Some species nest communally or use buildings, whereas others occupy remote mountains or open country. The Cinnamon Ibon's different appearance further shows that the catalogue's family membership cannot be reduced to the plumage of a House Sparrow.
How to recognize Old World Sparrows, Snowfinches
- Bill: conical seed-handling bills.
- Outline: small sturdy bodies with varied head patterns.
- Feeding: taking seeds and invertebrates around ground and vegetation.
Where they live
Native distribution centres on the Old World, with introduced populations of certain species now established much more widely. Farmland, villages, dry scrub, rocky slopes and alpine country support different members. Nest cavities or sheltered crevices matter to many, while others use different nesting structures. Human settlement is therefore a major habitat for some sparrows rather than a family-wide requirement, and introduced range should be kept separate from native occurrence.
