BIRDGACHA / FIELD NOTES
Vangas, Helmetshrikes, Woodshrikes, Shrike-flycatchers
Vangas and their relatives display an exceptional range of bill shapes, from fine insect-picking bills to heavy hooks and deep curves. Plumage and body size are similarly varied. Examples include Red-tailed Vanga (Calicalicus madagascariensis), Hook-billed Vanga (Vanga curvirostris), and Bernier's Vanga (Oriolia bernieri). They obtain invertebrates and other food by gleaning, probing, stripping or hunting from perches, depending on the species. Madagascar's radiation is especially striking, but the broader family also includes mainland African and Asian lineages. Helmetshrikes, woodshrikes and flycatcher-shrikes therefore expand this catalogue page beyond the birds usually imagined when someone hears the word vanga.
How to recognize Vangas, Helmetshrikes, Woodshrikes, Shrike-flycatchers
- Bill: bills ranging from fine to massive and hooked.
- Outline: diverse bodies with contrasting masks, crests or colours.
- Feeding: gleaning, probing and taking prey using varied bill shapes.
Where they live
Madagascar holds many distinctive species in wet and dry forest, while other members occupy woodland and forest in Africa and Asia. Within Madagascar, different feeding structures allow species to use bark, foliage, twigs or larger prey. Regional range and forest type are important distinctions. The family is consequently no longer an exclusively Malagasy assemblage in this catalogue, and a rainforest description should not be applied equally to every helmetshrike or woodshrike.
